The leadership of the Union Agricultural Society at Palmyra, NY is striving to provide for the future of this great fairground. It is with enthusiastic anticipation (and with some sadness, many hours of deliberation and hard work) that the decision to replace two buildings with a new structure that will benefit the people who continue to ’make traditions’ at The Wayne County Fair.
The history began in the 1800’s when several wealthy men from Palmyra and surrounding areas decided to establish a place where they could race their horses and the residents of Wayne [and surrounding counties] could exhibit their agricultural products. Over the years the fairgrounds expanded in acreage and many changes have taken place. Today, with agriculture waning and suburbia ever encroaching, it is necessary to again make changes that we hope are beneficial to the future of the grounds, the community and in the best interest of The Great Wayne County Fair.
The Donald C. Hulett Agricultural Barn, dedicated in 2010, has replaced the former cattle barns that the Board of Directors and Advisory Board members, deeming them no longer repairable, decided to replace. A grant was applied for, received and the construction replaced the two barns and show ring [that was situated between them] with one structure.
Electricity is being upgraded, water drainage addressed, care and upkeep of existing structures and other general maintenance is always an “on-going” expense. Just like owning a home, "...the work is never done."
There have been several events held in the building since its opening, thus proving it to be a wise investment in the future of the Wayne County Fair. It is expected that the buildingwill be used by 'outside groups' for events during the months of May through September providing the local area with more entertainment events.
